Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. An operating system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer run. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project; hence the name GNU/Linux. Debian GNU/Linux provides more than a pure OS: it comes with over 18733 packages, precompiled software bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine.

The best and safest way is to back up your data to and external disk before you start.

1) repartition your disk so that you have a partition for windows and a non-windows partition. Say you have a 300G disk and you want 200G for windows just ask windows to take only that much and leave the rest for linux.

2) Now you have installed windows and then put the linux installation. Linux distros will look for a non-windows partition and will install there if one is available.

Debian is the world's leading non-commercial totally free Linux distribution. Remaining loyal to the concept upon which Linux was created, it is produced by hundreds of volunteer developers around the world. Contrary to a common misconception, Debian is not for Linux gurus only. As a matter of fact, as you will see on the guide pages, its advanced package management system makes it one of the easier distributions for new Linux users to work with.
